Other cities will be green with envy

The west end smash hit show Wicked is out on tour, and arriving in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Of course, fans of the show will already know that — and some will even have queued for their tickets outside the King’s last spring, bright green cupcakes in hand.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s acclaimed novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, it’s the other side of the story to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

It’s an unlikely friendship between two sorcery students; the blonde and very popular Glinda, and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba (names ringing any bells yet?)

Their friendship reaches a crossroads as the popular girl becomes ever-more interested in making it with the in crowd — and it’s an argument which will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Let’s face it — who doesn’t love a baddie back story?

The King’s Theatre dates mark a Scottish premiere for Wicked and, as “one of the most popular west end musicals ever” (an accolade awarded by the London Evening Standard), audiences will no doubt be defying gravity to get there.
