Restaurant Review: Catch of the day and a cut above the rest

Dirty food is out and good old-fashioned fish and chips are in.

You could say the southside is one step ahead of the rest of greater Glasgow, now that the long-awaited Catch is dishing up suppers to superb restaurant standard (and plenty of them too).

The Fenwick Road eatery has been threatening to open for a while, whetting our appetites for a dash of salt and vinegar — and now that the welcome mat is out, food fans are lining up.

The other half and I grabbed a table among a sea of diners and admired the dedication to nautical themes; blue buoy lampshades, seaside accessories — there’s no mistaking what’s on the menu.

But it’s the menu which elevates this place beyond the usual fare, with elegant starters, supper options and even fizz to go with your fish — posh indeed.

I opted for an ample starter of salt and chilli squid with garlic and ginger mayo; a gorgeously presented, equally tasty basket of crisp rings, dry rubbed with a good kick of herbs and spice.

Having barely made it halfway through before the OH had scoffed his mac and cheese balls, it was safe to say his was a winner too; plump arancini-style rounds with a zingy relish — although to be fair, there weren’t as many on offer.

The menu is packed with offerings high and low, from lobster thermidor to battered black pudding — but with both of us hankering for comfort food, we opted for haddock and sole goujons.

Both were excellent; ample portions of white flaky fish and a mound of chips — with free refills, remember — although the haddock won out on crispiness.

Mushy peas were fresh and earthy, and even the side salad served alongside was worth a go, if you can squeeze it in.

Glasgow does fish and chips well — good news, if it’s the next craze around the corner — and Catch is undoubtedly a cut above the rest.

Hell or high water, I have a feeling we’ll be back.
