Restaurant Review: The PRestaurant

First thing’s first; how do you pronounce The PRestaurant? I didn’t get a chance to ask, and I’m sure neighbours round about either already know or don’t care too much when they’re necking exotic cocktails on the weekend.

Since the place is named after Paisley Road West, we’ll stick with The PR part.

Having shown up on a muggy Monday eve, the other half and I weren’t ready for the tropical drinks calling out from The PR’s Facebook page — ever the driver, I had a diet Coke instead. He had a bottle of Peroni which hadn’t yet seen a fridge — which was a shame, given the warm weather.

Chic black and white striped walls and event posters hint that The PR is a lively Saturday night joint. Still, there’s something there for family meal times too — including a kids eat for 99p offer running during the holidays.

With no kids in tow (skipping the obvious joke about him across the table) the OH and I argued over who was having the fish and chips. For a change, I won. What arrived was a board-full; a sizeable portion of haddock in light and airy Peroni beer batter, decent chips and a dish of moreish mushy peas — an enjoyable meal, and one even my big appetite struggled to finish.

The PRestaurant’s homemade tartare sauce was just thing on top, and a single pickled onion added a traditional chippy touch.

The OH had opted for the PR burger; a 6oz-er with mushrooms and peppercorn sauce. Points for presentation here; a good-looking bun arrived speared with a steak knife and threaded with crunchy onion rings.

They were the star of the plate; another lighter-than-air batter enveloping soft, sweet onion — and creamy coleslaw hit the spot too.

But the burger patty was a bit tough — and skinnier, palid chips couldn’t stand up to the golden, crunchier variety on the fish dish.

The PR burger has the makings of a great plate — who doesn’t love a punchy peppercorn sauce? — with a few tweaks.

Above all, there’s a warm welcome about The PRestaurant, and with very reasonable prices and cocktails flowing, it’s easy to see it as a go-to neighbourhood kitchen once the few minor kinks are ironed out.
