Singing into Spring

The group will perform Voices in Harmony at the Royal Concert Hall tomorrow.

Choir spokeswoman Anne Kay told Live: “We are happy to have two special guest choirs with their own distinguished conductors.

“In addition, we will have a world premiere of a new song written especially for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and performed by 50 pupils from four Glasgow primary schools.”

The new song The Commonwealth for the Common Good has been written by Frank O’Hagan to celebrate the Commonwealth Games, which are due to take place in Glasgow in July and August 2014.

The choir will join singers from four Glasgow schools, which have joined together to learn, sing and record this song.

This will be its first public performance.

The youngsters taking part are from St Bride’s School, Holy Cross Primary School, Cuthbertson Primary and Annette Street Primary, all from Govanhill.

The aims of Pheonix are to sing together, to bring as much pleasure as possible to its audiences and to raise money for causes in the community. Between 2010 and 2013, they raised over £30,000 in donations to charities.

The Northampton Male Voice Choir, founded in 1946, conducted by Stephen Bell, will also feature, as will the National Youth Choir of Scotland Boys Choir, which is conducted by Christopher Bell.

Members of the choir are experienced singers between the ages of 10 and 16 who can perform the increased musical and vocal demands of a national choir.

Stephen and Christopher Bell are brothers who hail from Northern Ireland and who each have distinguished musical careers in their own right.

This concert will be the first time they have appeared on stage together since they were boys in Belfast.

Anne continued: “Glasgow Phoenix Choir is very grateful for its continued sponsorship by The Co-operative Funeral Care, which allows the choir to take on a wide range of fundraising concerts throughout Scotland, and beyond, for many worthy causes.”

Glasgow Phoenix Choir is one of the foremost and longest established choral groups in Scotland, and indeed, the UK.

This mixed voice choir has today approximately 95 singing members, several non-singing associate members and many patrons.
