Smash hit play is set for Southbank Festival staging

A multi-talented performer has seen his directorial stage debut win rave reviews, crucial funding and a British tour.

Former Lenzie Academy pupil Robert Softley Gale (33), who has cerebral palsy, is a leader in the field of disability arts and is joint artistic director of Birds of Paradise Theatre Company.

The actor recently directed ‘Wendy Hoose’, written by Johnny McKnight, at Glasgow’s Oran Mor - and garnered a string of four-star reviews.

The play has been given funding of £32,500 by the Unlimited fund, which supports work created by disabled artists.

The money will fund a tour, including a stop at London’s prestigious Southbank Festival.

Robert said: “It is a fantastic recognition that our premier production has been pleasing audiences in Scotland and will now be seen at the Southbank Festival.”
