Sound of success

Being a successful sports club in Scotland is an expensive business.

That’s why the country’s top women’s football club Glasgow City FC are enlisting the help of some of the city’s top musicians to help them raise funds.

Singer-songwriter Sharon Martin will host an acoustic music gig at Glad Café in Shawlands on Easter Sunday.

Ticket sales will go some way towards footing the bill for the club’s UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.

The artists have all agreed to perform the gig at their own expense for the club.

After time as a lead vocalist in various groups, including as frontwoman for Grammy-winning record producer Stephen Lironi’s project, Flesh, Martin recently began to devote her time to life a solo artist.

She told Live: “I believe in Glasgow City. I believe in the vision and drive of their management team.

“They will win the Women’s Champions League in the not-so distant future, and one day be a household name throughout the whole of Europe.

“They are putting women’s football firmly on the map in Scotland.

“The training and development implemented at the club is clearly a major contributing factor to the rise in the standard of the Scottish women’s national squad.

“If I could make even the smallest contribution to that vision and achievement, then I think that is a great thing.”

Lynnie Carson who has supported Paulo Nutini as well as Italian born artistManuel Yepez Corsetti, will also perform at the gig.

Glasgow City’s Laura Montgomery added: “In the Champions League, we test ourselves against some of the best teams in the world, who operate on a financial level a million miles from ourselves.

“We have reached the last 16 twice in the past three seasons and hope for another good run in 2014.

“The biggest challenge for us however is always financial. The first round costs us on average £15,000 to be able to compete and with this being our seventh year in a row trying to find this amount of money becomes harder and harder.

“The music gig is our first event of the year to begin our fundraising.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Sharon, Lynnie and Manuel are putting on this acoustic session for us.

“They are all incredibly talented artists. Anyone who enjoys good music and is keen to hear and support some of the best young talent around Glasgow at the moment should come along.”

The gig starts at 7.30pm on Sunday at the Glad Café, Shawlands.

Tickets are priced £10 each and can be purchased in advance from www.glasgowcityladiesfc.co.uk or from the door on the night.
