Sounds International will be on song with Christmas charity concert

Local community choir Sounds International returns to Netherlee Parish Church to stage its annual Christmas Charity Concert next week.

The concert will be conducted by Irish soprano, Ellen Mawhinney, and accompanied on the piano by Dan Brown – both of whom graduated earlier this year from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The choir’s programme includes popular Christmas songs and carols sung in four-part harmony by members of the 80-strong choir, who meet in nearby Stamperland Church Hall on Tuesday evenings throughout the year.

Children from Netherlee Primary School choir will also be performing on the night and there will be solos from both Dan and Ellen.

Sounds International is a registered charity and sings to raise funds for other charities and good causes – in this instance the Starchild charity, which aims to help improve the lives of children in Uganda, and the Glasgow-based Lodging House Mission, which is dedicated to providing care and support to homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded people.

Bev Brown, choir committee member, said: “Now something of a tradition in the local area, this concert marks the start of the festive season with well-known songs and music.

“It also raises funds for worthy causes and our thanks go to the many local companies who support us each year by sponsoring songs on the programme to boost the amount raised.”

Bev continued: “Since it was founded by Eddie Binnie in 2003, the choir has raised almost £100,000 for charities and good causes at home and abroad.”

The Christmas Charity Concert takes place on Tuesday December 4, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from choir members, Netherlee Primary School and at the door on the night.

There will also be a collection point at the church door for toiletry donations to be distributed by East Renfrewshire Good Causes.
