The future sounds good

Scotland’s top orchestral talents are set to perform a groundbreaking world premiere.

The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland presents the NYOS junior orchestra in a Commonwealth Celebration at Stevenson Hall, at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, on Sunday (4pm).

The group — made up Scotland’s most talented orchestral musicians aged eight and over — will perform the works of of Elgar, Walton and Eric Coates.

The junior orchestra will give the first ever performance of Ludi – Partita for Orchestra — an NYOS commission celebrating the Commonwealth Games, by recent alumnus Peter Longworth.

Joan Gibson, chief executive of the group said: “NYOS challenged alumnus and composer Peter Longworth to write a new piece celebrating Glasgow’s hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“Through his composition Peter has successfully recreated the spirit of the Games within the orchestra.”

The orchestra will once again be conducted by the brilliant and engaging Roland Kieft, artistic director of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague .

For Roland, the training and nurturing of young musical talent has been a lifelong passion.

He told Scene: “I can only envy the Scots for the impressive National Youth Orchestras of Scotland.

“The intelligent and enthusiastic programmes are beyond comparison with the rest of Europe.”

The junior orchestra has become the first step on the ladder for ambitious future members of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland.

The group has become synonymous with exciting programming, challenging repertoire, prestigious performances and the opportunity to work with inspiring conductors and soloists.

The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland is unique in that it provides orchestral experiences in classical and jazz music for its students from the age of eight to 25, through no fewer than eight ensembles ranging in age, size and musical style.

In addition to organising training, intensive rehearsals and national and international concert tours for its orchestras, The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland is committed to introducing musical experiences to Scotland’s young people through workshops in primary and secondary schools.

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland will launch a year of Commonwealth Celebration at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this week (April 19).
