Northern Soul adopted particular sounds from the ‘60s and ‘70s that reached certain UK docklands via imports of 45rpms from the States, much of which came from the new wave Detroit movement pioneered by Berry Gordy and his Tamla Motown label.

Now, Northern is almost mainstream and has even made it on to the esoteric BBC quiz show University Challenge.

And since the music and dance craze has been outed, Motown has enjoyed a renaissance with venues and bars holding their own Motown music nights with classic songs from the iconic label, including The Supremes, Four Tops and Temptations.

At last, Northern has reached the Southside and is coming to a cool bar near you.

Trend savvy bar owner Gary Broadhurst is bringing the sounds of soul to his bar and restaurant, Jayz on Kilmarnock Road, with a bumper Motown night tomorrow (Friday) and a live Motown band that promises to be a corker of a gig.

Broadhurst said: “I felt there was a market for Motown on the Southside and this has never been done before; yet, it’s amazing, so many families have been brought up on this style of music.

“This is about bringing a bit of Detriot to Shawlands.”

When Jayz took up residence on Killie Road, it was Broadhurst’s vision that very quickly marked the venue as a go-to gig for live music and a platform for new and unsigned talent.

And, cleverly, Broadhurst has managed to marry that ethos with a family-friendly eaterie – no mean task.

With The Motown Band striking up at 9pm, there’s plenty of time to test out the menu beforehand and make a night of it.
