Theatre on the edge at Govanhill Baths

Govanhill Baths continues to draw theatre fans south next week, this time for a rarely-produced play — and a debut for Crossfade Theatre.

The company is a collaboration between Rachel D’Arcy and Nicola Todd, two Glasgow University MLitt theatre graduates — and the duo are ready to tackle a challenging show.

Their first venture is A Bench at the Edge, by American playwright Luigi Jannuzzi — an avant-garde piece delving into life, death and two people on the edge, contemplating their ‘heroic dive’ and wrestling with morality (and each other).

It’s perhaps fitting, then, that the setting is the swimming pool turned arts venue.

Co-founder Rachel told The Extra: “We’re extremely excited to be presenting the play at Govanhill Baths, a venue with a rich history saved from demolition. Having itself quivered on the edge of existence, the Baths seemed a fitting venue for us to tackle the themes.”

A Bench on the Edge promises an edge of black comedy too — and a message from writer Jannuzzi all the way to Scotland has the same wicked humour.

Rachel added: “He has reached out via Facebook, urging us to ‘break a bench!’”

The show runs June 11-13, 7.30pm — tickets £8/£6 from brownpapertickets.com/event/1559729.
