This Easter has something for all stages at the theatre

The theatre in Kildrum prides itself on having the community at its heart and its annual open day is an important day in the calendar.

But it is just one event in a packed programme of entertainment for children in particular – with lots happening over the Easter holidays, including workshops for ages 3-11.

Amy Angus, creative learning manager, said: “Historically, the theatre has always tried to open its doors at least once a year and have a family event that’s free to attend – because we are rooted in the community.

“We try to make it a little bit different every year so that people who come back will see something different.

“This year, we’re having a backstage tour of the theatre so people can see all the different hidey-holes.

“You can also see all the costumes and maybe try them on and get some pictures!”

The pop-in event promises something for all ages to enjoy, from arts and crafts to face painting, which is always a favourite.

“It’s always busy and there’s a real family atmosphere,” said Amy. “There are family-led activities, such as storytime.

“The idea is that it is very relaxed – drop in when it suits you and leave when it suits. It’s really fun and friendly.”

Some activities will run throughout the day, while others are timetabled.

These include several tasters of what the theatre has to offer year round – including the variety of drama classes it offers.

“We’ll have theatre workshops that young people can sign up to do on the day – these are short examples of what ‘s on offer at the theatre, including drama classes, dance and musical theatre,” said Amy.

“If someone comes along and really enjoys what they are doing, we can certainly signpost people to the classes we run on a regular basis.

“But really the workshops are a lot of fun and they play a lot of games. It just helps to start that journey of drama activities.

“And it gives a flavour of the opportunities we have at the theatre.”

The open day will also tell people about some of the exciting shows that are on their way.

“Easter is a time when we have a lot of family shows on, including some fantastic puppet shows,” added Amy.

“These are for various different age groups and various kinds of puppetry.”

Cumbernauld Theatre’s Family Open Day is on Saturday, April 8, from 11am to 4pm.

All activities are free and the cafe-bar will be selling snacks and drinks.
