Thrills and chills from Southside Film Fest

It’s the first of two pop-ups in the autumn film club programme — and with a screening falling on Halloween, there has to be an element of horror involved.

Friday filmgoers will be treated to a two course Italian meal (prepared by the resident Edwardian Kitchen) and glass of prosecco before settling down to watch Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now.

The 1973 thriller follows grief-stricken parents trying to move on following the death of their daughter — but an encounter with a psychic may lead them down another path.

Louise Maughan, of the National Trust for Scotland, believes Pollok House to be the ideal setting for an evening with the occult, commenting: “If you liked the upstairs/downstairs aspect of last year’s sell out screening of Gosford Park, then you’ll love the suitably spooky atmosphere for Don’t Look Now.

“On entering the house, you can soak up the splendour of Venice through our 18th century View of the Rialto Bridge, then travel along the cinematic canals with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie.”

The creeps continue at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on Sunday with The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, an early silent film by Alfred Hitchcock.

With the hall’s famous Wurlitzer organ on hand to provide a soundtrack, southside film fans are in for an added treat.

Tickets for tomorrow are £30, and the meal is at 7.30pm. The Lodger will be shown on Sunday at 7.30pm and tickets are £8/£6 — see www.southsidefilmfestival.net.
