The 2nd Lanark Scout Group is the largest youth organisation in Lanark with 200 members.

“It’s one of the oldest Scout Groups in the world as it was founded in 1910, and we’re rightly proud of our history,” said Siobhan Sharkey, one of the leaders.

“When we were having a clear out of our hall a couple of years ago we unearthed some film footage which we sent to the Scottish Screen Archive.

“They are using it in their own collection but have returned the films as a DVD for us to enjoy.

“It’s fascinating! The colour film is from 1940s. One ten minute clip is from Lanark Scouts on a trip to Paris in 1947, and the other of the Scouts off to camp in Oban in 1948 or 1949, we think.

“We know that one Scout in the film, Robert Kirkhope, is still in Lanark and continues, to this day, to be a strong supporter of our Group.

“We’d love to contact other members of the Troop, and the families of the Scouts and Leaders in the films to allow them to see their relatives in action. And we are hoping that the Gazette will help us with this task.”

Anyone with information about Scouting in Lanark during this time, or who recognises anyone from the footage, should email [email protected].
