Window on the Past: Meeting at Mearns Cross

MEARNS Cross looks a little bit different here.

Kilmarnock Road may be the central focus nowadays, but back when this photograph was taken (date unknown), the older Main Street, parallel and to the west, was the place to be seen.
Still, it’s hardly a deserted street scene — it looks like there was plenty going on.
One prominent feature is Porter’s Inn, the white, two-storey building. But perhaps most notable is the group of girls playing in the foreground barefoot — the weather was, presumably, fairer than it has been this week.
