Window to the Past: Howatt’s blacksmith forge, 1890s

There were three forges at ‘The West’.

This was Howatt’s in Cowglen Road (now Barrhead Road). His forge building and house High Cartcraigs were at the south west corner of the road between the railway bridge and Kennishead Road.

Bryce Howatt, on the right with his son also Bryce who died young, on the back of a Clydesdale heavy horse, worked mainly with the horses.

The ones being hod belonged to Mr Curr of Merrylee Farm.
