And with the festive season comes the annual debate about which is best. In a poll by Blinkbox Music, Fairytale of New York was voted the number one Christmas song of all time ­ despite a less than cheery theme.

The Pogues pipped Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas and Wham’s Last Christmas to the post — but over a third of the 2,000 surveyed agreed the 80s had the best festive tunes.

Our social media friends have been casting their votes, including @DahliaBoudoir who said: “Deck the Halls­; you can catch me singing it all year round”, while Fraser Davidson backed an unusual choice with Annie Lennox’s version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

So what’s your favourite Christmas jingle? We put the question to a panel of readers...

Sharon Morrison, from Shawlands, commented: “Boney M with Mary’s Boy Child. It brings back happy memories. It can put a smile on my face and a tear in my eye at the same time.”

Lisa­-Marie Patton, from Woodfarm, said: “There’s too many to choose from! I think Last Christmas by Wham. It’s a great song that still gets played on the radio every Christmas.”

Shawlands man Crawford Smith settled on John Lennon’s War Is Over, explaining: “It’s about peace and you just can’t help singing along. Folks say it’s a downer but it has a positive message.”

And for Karen Minnery, from Giffnock, Oh Holy Night comes out on top. She told The Extra: “After all, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, and I think that’s forgotten a lot of the time.”
