Scotland is home to 282 Munro peaks, defined as over 3,000 feet, and many of the most impressive mountain ranges are a short distance from Glasgow. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is a rich hunting-ground for Munro bagging, about 40 miles northwest of the city. Some Munros near Glasgow can be tackled in pairs as they are part of the same ridge. Here is a selection of hill-wallking routes to get you started.
The best online resource for hillwalkers in Scotland is the Walk Highlands website. Before you take on any of these Munros, be sure to check the guidance on walking conditions and routes here.
9. Ben More
Just under an hour and a halfs drive from Glasgow, this monro offers dominating views on the drive south from Crianlarich, these twos are often unrelentingly steep so brace yourself for knee ache on the descent. The views of Ben More are arguably the finest of the day. (Pic: Walk Highlands)
10. Stob Binnein
Right by Ben More, you could probably do both of the munros in the same day if you were feeling particularly active. Be prepared for some steep clambering on the way up and some shaky legs on the way down. Much like Ben More, it offers some of the best views of the lower highlands once conquered.
11. Ben Oss and Ben Dubhcraig
Just under an hour and a halfs drive from Glasgow, the start point of this hike was once the site of a famous battle between Robert the Bruce and the McDougall clan. Thankfully the hills are rather more peaceful today. Save time to marvel at the peak of neighbouring Ben Lui from Ben Oss. (Pic: Walk Highlands)
12. Meall Glas and Sgiath Chuil
An hour and a half from Glasgow and requiring a ten mile walk, these peaks are not easily claimed by Munro baggers. Those who do summit the peaks will be rewarded with gorgeous views of the Lawers range. (Pic: Walk Highlands)
