Mural celebrating sporting legacy between Scotland and Wales underway in Glasgow city centre

A new 12ft art mural commemorating the sporting legacy between Scotland and Wales is currently being painted in Glasgow city centre.

The colourful scene, which is being brought to life by celebrated Glaswegian mural artist Rogue One, has appeared on the building outside the Hope Street entrance of YOTEL Glasgow.

The city-centre hotel was chosen as the location of the artwork as it plays host to Team Wales House throughout the duration of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The mural will span across two walls, with the first nearing completion last Friday, and the second due to start production early this week.

The vibrant mural, which was designed by Welsh artist Pete Fowler, showcases iconic symbols of both nations - including the Welsh dragon and Scotland’s national animal, the unicorn - alongside a range of sporting scenes.

At the heart of the artwork will read the words ‘Gwlad, Gwlad, Glaschu’, which translates to ‘Land, Land, Glasgow’ - bringing together Welsh and Scottish Gaelic in a subtle nod to the Welsh national anthem, while celebrating the cultural connection between the two nations.

As such, the mural celebrates the lasting sporting legacy that has been forged between the two nations during the Games, whilst providing a vibrant new piece of public art for people in the city centre to enjoy.

Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, Team Wales CEO, said: “It’s incredibly special to see Wales represented in the heart of Glasgow in such a bold and creative way, bringing together our national identity with our love of sport and the connection we share with Scotland.

“The Commonwealth Games have already given us so many reasons to be proud and this mural captures that spirit while celebrating the two nations side by side.”

Neil Taylor, General Manager at YOTEL Glasgow, said: “The mural really captures the energy and sense of celebration that Team Wales has already brought to both the venue and the city.

“We’re loving being part of the atmosphere surrounding the Games, and this artwork feels like a fitting way to celebrate what has been a very special time for everyone involved already.”

VEGA, the entertainment space situated on the top floor of YOTEL, is playing an integral role in Team Wales House, providing an accessible space for athletes, supporters, friends, partners and stakeholders throughout the duration of the Games.

What’s more, the venue will be celebrating the end of the Games with a special showing of the Closing Ceremony on 2 August, and is running a limited edition Welsh inspired food and drink menu throughout the duration of the event.
