Anderston is one of Glasgow's best known neighbourhoods which has undergone significant transformation over the years. The area was well known for it's industries such as shipbuilding, iron-founding, tool manufacturing and engineering due to the close proximity of the Clyde. Anderston became an area where many people from the Scottish Lowlands headed to for work with a large Irish immigrant population also settling in the area by 1831. When slum housing clearances began and a new motorway was constructed through the heart of Glasgow, Anderston was to be changed forever with many of these famous faces having been born in the area.
Although not all of their houses longer exist, here are seven famous Glasgow faces who were born and grew up in Anderston.
5. Michael Martin
Michael Martin served as Speaker of the House of Commons between 2000 and 2009 having been born as the son of merchant seaman and a school cleaner on William Street in Anderston. He would be brought up in a tenement in the area before moving to Springburn when he was 14. | AFP via Getty Images
6. Johann Lamont
Former Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont was born in Anderston in July 1957. She attended Woodside Secondary School and obtained a degree from the University of Glasgow. Photo: John Devlin
7. Arthur Henderson
Arthur Henderson was an iron moulder and Labour politician who served three separate terms as Leader of the Labour Party. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1934 for his efforts to try and stop the aggression that would eventually lead to the outbreak of World War II. He was born at 10 Paterson Street in Anderston to a domestic servant and textile worker. | Getty Images
