Pubs are an essential part of Glaswegian culture they’re where folks from all walks of life go to unwind after a long day, or celebrate with friends on the weekend.
Glasgow is pub city - with hundreds of public houses in the city accommodating each and every type of sub-culture. Though today we wanted to focus on pubs that represent Glasgow as a whole, old-school classic pubs that best represent Glaswegian culture.
One of the finest examples of an island bar open-plan pub in Scotland. It has the longest continuous bar in the UK, measuring 32m (104ft 3in). Built in 1870 and remodelled in 1885–7 by John Scouller and again in 1901, when the partitions between sitting rooms and the bar were removed | Supplied
10. MJ Heraghty
Heraghty’s in the Southside is a small Edwardian drinkers’ pub with an elegant carved back gantry that is adorned with mirrors, columns and decorative capitals. The bar counter, which has modern tiles around the base, was installed in the 1930s, which is the date of the Art Deco stained glass. | Contributed
11. The Laurieston
Described by CAMRA as ‘one of the most remarkable pub interiors in the UK’ - The Laurieston still features the near exact-same interiors as it did from its (circa) 1960 remodelling - with CAMRA remarking most on the pubs ‘island bar style. | Contributed
12. The Arlington
There’s been a pub on this site on Woodlands Road since 1860. The Arlington Bar in Woodlands Road in Glasgow claims to be the home of the real Stone of Destiny which sits proudly in the bar. Whether this is true or another Glaswegian pub landlord tall tale is anyone’s guess at this point. | Contributed
