MSP demands ‘fairer share” for area

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Jamie Hepburn has waded into a local council funds row, after a move which was argued set to give the area a fairer share of resources was voted down.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth are in the North Area Committee zone, which covers just over a quarter of North Lanarkshire’s population.

Mr Hepburn says funds allotted for local improvements are often divided equally among the areas, ignoring the disparity in size.

And he says he is dismayed an SNP motion designed to gain what’s claimed to be a fairer share of the cake for the area was voted down on an amendment by Stepps Labour councillor Willie Hogg.

Mr Hepburn said: “It is indefensible that democratic scrutiny, resources and funding is allocated equally across these six Area Committees when one of them contains over a quarter of the entire population of the Council area.

“As a result this imbalance will continue and the people of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth will continue to get less than their fair share from this council.”

Councillor Hogg was unavailable for comment.
