Objectors fail to stop Tunnock's extension

The firm says expansion is needed to cope with “increased worldwide demand” for its famous products and 30 jobs will be created.

Objectors claimed existing parking problems in the area will worsen as a result, but the planning application was approved by South Lanarkshire Council.

Nearly 580 people are employed at the bakery which has stood on its site in the centre of Uddingston since the 1960s.

A statement lodged with the firm’s planning application said: “The effect of the proposed extension is to allow new and improved equipment to be installed.

“This investment of several million pounds will additionally safeguard current employment on the site.”

Protestors included local residents, Uddingston Community Council and West of Scotland Housing Association which owns a number of properties adjacent to the bakery.

Issues raised included parking, with residents saying Tunnock’s workers already take up spaces on the streets. There were also concerns over road safety as the site is next to Crofthead Park which was upgraded recently.

However, a report to South Lanarkshire’s planning committee said there would be no significant increase in the number of lorry deliveries.

The report acknowledged there is a great demand for parking spaces in the vicinity, but pointed out that the extra staff taken on by Tunnock’s will work night shift when the public car parks are used. less

The report added: “Tunnock’s proposes a reconfiguration of its internal parking layout in an effort to maximise parking within its site.

“The expansion of an existing business and its associated additional employment opportunities is to be welcomed.”
