The barn at the 18th century Cormiston Farm has been used for weddings and ceilidhs in the past but applicant and owner Richard Phillips has now officially applied to change the use of the building to a function venue.

A decision on the venue will be taken in September but Richard believes the decision could have been made sooner.

He said: “The whole process started in October 2012 and we have had to turn down at least 10 weddings this year alone.

“We did have weddings there before the council said we couldn’t do so and Cormiston hosted barn dances and ceilidhs for decades. It seems an incredibly complicated planning system; in England it is much simpler and only costs £80. This process has cost thousands of pounds.

“We have also been told that even if the application is granted we may not be able to play music above 30 decibells which is about the same level as two people having a conversation.”
