Positive support for Birkwood plans

LESMAHAGOW residents, many of them former workers at Birkwood when it was a hospital, came along to examine the plans for the castle and its grounds.

The plans were on display at the Resource Centre from Wednesday to Friday, with Daniel Lloyd from Birkwood Estates Ltd on hand to answer questions.

The plans include the demolition of hospital wards, the development of five areas of housing in the grounds, the original 86-acre site of the hospital, which closed in 2002 and 38 acres to the north of that, as well as log cabins.

A new access road would come off New Trows Road.

“We have had a lot of positive support so far,” said Daniel as he answered questions at the exhibition. It is obviously such a big part of the community.

“Most of the people have some connection to the castle. It is an important part of the village.”
