Ravenscraig is re-opening but swimmers face longer wait for facilities

NL Leisure has announced it will be re-opening just one of its local sports centres a fortnight after the Scottish Government deemed it possible.

It has emerged that Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre has been earmarked for re-opening on Monday (September 14) but that no other of the area’s facilities will be open within this first phase

That includes Motherwell’s popular Aquatec and the Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex - meaning that swimmers will need to travel to Wishaw if they fancy a dip.

The Motherwell Times and Bellshill Speaker has learned that some NL Leisure staff in still -to-open venues have even been threatened with redundancy but the trust would not be drawn on this.

A spokesperson said: “Culture and Leisure NL intend to bring services and facilities back on a phased basis and in order to make them as safe as possible for customers and staff, teams have been implementing health and safety measures and planning how operational procedures will work.

“This is a complex task, with restrictions implemented and capacity reduced

“Venues will look different and how customers access and use facilities will be a different experience from before.

“Culture and Leisure NL has been facing significant financial challenges and given that the impact of coronavirus has had an immediate and direct impact on all culture and leisure operations in terms of lost income, the sustainability of some services will require to be considered by both CLNL and the council.”

Culture NL remained unable to open any of the area’s libraries within this phase - and no dates have been issued as yet for their re-opening.
