The woman, who asked not to be named, contacted the Gazette when her daughter, who attends college in Glasgow, told her that the price of a student ticket on Stuarts of Carluke’s 240x service from Lanark to Glasgow would rise from £13.50 to £25 for a 10 journey ticket.

The woman said: “I think a lot of passengers could understand it if it was a slight increase but to put up fares by as much as 85 per cent is ridiculous.”

A spokesperson for the company said that the service had been running at a “significant loss” and that there was no alternative but to put the price up.

The spokesperson continued: “This is not a subsidised service and there was no way that we could sustain these financial losses.”
