Jackson Carlaw MSP and Paul Masterton MP have written to the company seeking a better understanding of why the store is closing.

The store has been a fixture of Newton Mearns since at least the 1960s and currently provides limited post office services to locals.

Mr Carlaw and Mr Masterton have asked if the closure is part of a broader business strategy about moving to larger convenience style stores.

They have also sought assurances from the Post Office on the future of its services in Newton Mearns.

Mr Carlaw said: “Given the store’s long history in the area it is important to confirm how this decision was reached and whether there were any particular local factors at play.

“Post Office services across Eastwood remain a topic of great concern and we must ensure the closure of one shop does not further limit access to this important resource.”

Mr Masterton added: “Residents have been impacted by Post Office closures throughout East Renfrewshire. While counter services for the drawing of pensions and the like were not provided here, it remains important that this service, although limited, is not lost forever.”
