Turnbull High pupils prepare to change the world

The world climate summit at Glasgow may have been cancelled this year because of covid – but environmentally conscious pupils at a Bishopbriggs school didn’t let this stand in their way.

The youngsters at Turnbull High School held their own successful Youth Climate Summit recently.

All departments created an activity or lesson to raise awareness of a climate or sustainability theme in context to their subject.

S6 Sustainability captains Mhairi McBride, Abbie McDonald and Logan McManus, who helped to organise the event, said: “Getting the whole school involved in climate activities was enjoyable and we feel it’s really made a difference and raised awareness of global issues.”

In Modern Languages, S2 pupils learned key French
vocabulary related to climate issues and recycling.

S4 geography pupils looked into how cities might look in the future, from skyscraper gardens to underwater tunnels for transport, underground farming and renewable energy sources being the main energy provider.

Clare Grehan, Principal Teacher of Modern Languages, said: “We even managed to set up a ‘live lesson’ to involve pupils who were isolating at home.

“We also started to grow our own seeds by
recycling jam jars and plastic
bottles for containers.”
