Linda Alexander’s grand-daughter Hayley (14) came to live with her in Braidwood last year and was hoping to meet up with friends at Carluke High.

However, Hayley, who was living in England, was left disappointed when the final place was taken and she was forced to start her studies at Lanark Grammar School in November instead.

Hayley fitted in well but now that a place has opened for her back at Carluke Linda claims that council education bosses have told her that if she does not go to Carluke now, she will have to pay her own way to Lanark.

A council spokeswoman told the Gazette that while the local authority appreciated the situation was “causing concern” if Hayley remained at Lanark Grammar she would not be eligible for free school transport.
