The appliance of science is something they know a lot about at Williamwood High School as they were among the top five Scottish schools at a national competition.

The pupils were taking part in the ScottishPower Foundation’s Get Energised awards and were announced winners during a ceremony at Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland.

The all-girl winning team met with the other schools from across the country before being awarded with the overall trophy and a cash prize for their school.

The Get Energised with the ScottishPower Foundation offered pupils the opportunity to engage in a series of challenges exploring key areas of science and engineering.

These challenges were spaced out in a series of Challenge Days and more than 300 pupils across Scotland participated in them.

David Sudding, a physics teacher at Williamwood, said: “We are delighted to have been a part of the project with the ScottishPower Foundation and National Museum Scotland.

The project has been a great way for us to introduce different elements of the science and technology industries to the students at a really crucial time for them making the next move in their further education and careers.

“The girls are very much looking forward to getting back to school and letting everyone know about their win.”

Williamwood HS collected the most points for their work during the Challenge Days.

Ann Loughrey (pictured with the Williamwood teams) said: “The ScottishPower Foundation was established in May last year and to date has funded over 20 projects across Britain with themes ranging from arts and culture, through to environment and poverty.

“The foundation is delighted to support Get Energised programme and see how popular it has been with pupils providing them with hands on experience in practical problem solving.”
