Lanark Grammar School Charity Week 2014 Slideshow

IT seemed that the whole of Lanark Grammar School was ‘pulling together’ in the crusade against a dreaded disease – on one occasion quite literally!

In recent years the school has practically adopted the Glasgow-based, nationally recognised Beatson Unit, providing treatment to cancer sufferers from this and many other areas of of Scotland.

With raising cash to support the unit’s life-saving and enhancing work as their aim, pupils and staff alike dedicated themselves to a whole week of novel fundraising events under the umbrella title of Beat It For The Beatson.

While some of them events left staff and pupils nearly beat physically, others were a wee bit more docile!

The week began energetically with the start of a Tug o’ War tournament with the school’s senior pupils taking the strain on the ropes during their regular PE sessions, paying £1 towards the Beatson funds for the pleasure of taking part.

Meanwhile, an equally energy-sapping contest took place on the school soccer pitch with a sponsored staff and S6 ladies football match.

It was back to the pitch the next day when the Ballin’ for the Beatson session took place, a Crossbar Challenge with all pupils invited to pay £1 for taking three shots at goal, the aim not being anything easy like scoring but to hit the woodwork instead.

The next day it was teachers’ faces which were the target as a sponsored wet sponge-throwing challenge was enthusiastically taken up by their pupils. A Bad Hair Day was held on the Thursday as was the creation of a symbolic heart, shaped in donated coins.

A Drop a Beat for the Beaton musical concert was held on the Friday featuring the many talents of the senior pupils and this was followed by a Bushtucker Trial which left those taking part resolved never to complain about school canteen food again!

The superb result of all this activity was a magnificent £3602 raised for the Beatson, the pupils and teachers of Lanark Grammar, not for the first time, giving us ALL a lesson in compassion.

Freelance photographers Sarah Peters and James Clare were on hand to capture some of the action and their pictures are featured in our slideshow, created for your viewing please by editor Julie Currie.
