Mearns children gain bookworm honours

Newton Mearns youngsters booked themselves a special award by taking part in a fun holiday-time reading challenge.

They were among hundreds of children across East Renfrewshire who took part in this year’s Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge.

Some of the children came along to Mearns Community Library recently to receive their medals and certificates for reading at least six books during the school summer holidays.

The initiative had been launched locally by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, whose chairman, Jim Wilson was on hand to do the honours and congratulate the youngsters.

And one little girl, six-year-old Mirrun Mooker even sat down to read Jim a story from one of the books on the Mearns Library’s shelves.

The Reading Agency had created a new theme for this year’s challenge called, Animal Agents.

Best-selling children’s illustrator Tony Ross worked on bringing the theme to life, designing collecting cards, which feature the Animal Agents characters and fun activities for the children to take part in.
