The study aid used to teach primary seven children in New Stevenston condemned all Palestinians as terrorists and extremists.

Parents’ horror at the racist content “went viral”.

North Lanarkshire Council, which originally produced the material, says it is obsolete, and that all local schools are being told to find whether they still have it.

The authority has offered a full and frank apology for the blunder, which it moved quickly to correct.

Westfield councillor Barry McCulloch said: “The teaching material which describes Palestinians as terrorists is wholly inaccurate and offensive. “As a member of the council, I add my own apology to those already offered by the Education Directorate and the school concerned.

“In North Lanarkshire we have a sound record of teaching an accurate understanding of the world peoples and their faiths and that peaceful coexistence is an ambition that we must all strive for.”

He added: “I think that this error at one of our schools is an isolated incident which will be quickly corrected.

“You should be assured of our determination to teach our children in an accurate way that properly explains the history and current extreme difficulties that face the Palestinian people.”
