TV hopeful Ronan bags bursary

An Abronhill man is one of just 30 UK-wide students who has been awarded a TV production and Journalism bursary from the Royal Television Society this year.

Ronan Smith, who studies HND Creative Industries – Television on the Cumbernauld campus of New College Lanarkshire, has just been confirmed as one of recipients of the undergraduate scheme which aims to widen participation in the media industry.

Talented Ronan is now in his third year of studying on campus in a number of disciplines.

He had previously completed HNC Creative Industries – Television, and NQ Creative Industries – Film and Photography.

He said: “It was quite intimidating when I applied for the Royal Television Society.

“I had to go into depth on my background and why I was applying, showcasing some of the work I had done with New College Lanarkshire previously.

“I then had a two-hour phone call with the Bursary manager, Anne Dawson.

“This was a tough task as sometimes I stammer when speaking to new people, especially on the phone, but I felt at ease as the call went on explaining about what I had written in my application and she was lovely.

“I was over the moon when I heard I had been accepted, I recently had my induction via Zoom, and it was amazing to be surrounded by so many amazingly talented people.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to Alan Moffat and Michael Grant for helping me all the way from NQ to HND.

“I wouldn’t have gotten this far so fast in thecollege and becoming a member of RTS without their continued support!”

Each recipient receives £1,000 per year to assist with their expenses and living costs.

The RTS will also aim to set-up mentoring opportunities with one of their industry members in their final year of study.

This is the first year that students undertaking HND qualifications in Television, Film Production, Journalism or related subjects have been eligible to apply for the bursary.

Commenting, Lecturer Alan Moffat said: “I was happy to write Ronan’s reference which accurately reflected his abilities, attitude and personal qualities.

“I hope the RTS bursary will give Ronan even greater opportunities to make the most of his talents and meet contacts in the industry who will help him as he embarks on a career in television.”
