A lot more than ten green bottles

The Cumbernauld based Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA) recently celebrated the opening of their eco greenhouse made out of empty plastic bottles with a ‘Grand Greenhouse Opening and Teddy Bear Picnic’.

This special eco-friendly greenhouse has been made to allow users of the Charity’s Family Support Centre to grow and plant their own vegetables, plants or favourite flowers in the greenest way possible.

Kim McKay, one of the Play and Learning Support Workers, said: “It will allow our service users to gain confidence, learn new skills and promote independence, as well as encouraging all the participants to meet at the centre which helps stop their feeling of social isolation.”

This eco-friendly greenhouse has been created by the community spirit so important to the SSBA; bottles were donated by local residents after an appeal in the Cumbernauld News and the Weir Alloa Employees Group volunteers came along to help clean the bottles for the big build.

Vikki Rothero, who also works as a Play and Learning Support Worker added: “One of our service users’ dads, Stuart Leckie, kindly built the greenhouse and another volunteer, Ryan Griffin, laid the slabs inside the new plastic paradise for plants – we’re very grateful to both of them!”

This special opening is part of the SSBA’s ‘Positive Connections Group’ funded by ‘Short Breaks’, which is run one Saturday out of the month, a vital activity in the calendar for the users.

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association is one of Scotland’s oldest self-funding charities and relies on donations, volunteer fundraising and acts of kindness to raise over £1million pounds every year to give life-long support to over 3,500 children, young adults and families throughout Scotland born with the lifelong, complex disabilities of spina bifida and or hydrocephalus for which there is no known cure.
