Antonine Centre visitors slammed for lack of social distancing

The Cumbernauld News has received a number of complaints about shoppers steadfastly refusing to heed rules on social distancing.

The complaints focus chiefly on the Antonine Centre where the conduct of some is giving grounds for concern

One shopper Graeme Smith got in touch after picking up a prescription in Boots.

Mr Smith said: “I was totally horrified by the lack of any social distancing and people completely ignoring the use of face masks. There were groups of as many as eight people all within inches of each other gathering at certain places with no protection.

“I am not blaming the shops themselves as I could observe they were keeping to guidelines but the shoppers were acting as if nothing was wrong.

“ I am a middle-aged man and until now have not been too concerned about Covid 19 but after yesterday’s trip I have to wonder why we were so quick to drop our guard.

“The only outcome is that within weeks cases will rise and effectively put us back into lockdown because if that was in Cumbernauld I assume most towns will be the same.”

An Antonine Centre spokesman said: “In line with Government guidelines we have introduced a number of safety measures in the mall, such as social distancing measures, dedicated entry and exit doors, controlled entry if numbers exceed capacity, visual reminders for our shoppers and audio messaging is played throughout the mall. We ask that all visitors observe this and follow our safety messaging.”
