Health chiefs state who is next for vaccine in NHS Lanarkshire

The first to receive the vaccine within NHS Lanarkshire boundaries were two medical professionals in University Hospital Hairmyres - Dr Karen Gray who is a consultant radiologist and Endoscopy Decontamination Unit team leader Andrew Stewart

Both did so on the first day of the programme last Tuesday (December 8)

Dr Gray said “I’ve read a lot of articles and information about the vaccine and know it is the sensible thing to do, as getting covid will be worse than getting the injection.”

Mr Stewart added: “I work with patients on the red pathway and I want to protect them and my family. It’s a privilege to be one of the first people in Lanarkshire to receive the vaccine.”

Also vaccinated on that day were staff from the emergency department and those who care for the elderly.

The answer as to who will receive it next was also forthcoming and timescales too were provided.

During the first phase, the priority groups are healthcare staff with direct patient contact, residents and staff in care homes and over 80s

These groups will be vaccinated between December and February.

Heather Knox, Chief Executive, added: “While this is great step forward in winning the fight against covid-19, we can’t become complacent. We need to continue to play our part in keeping ourselves safe.”
