This Thursday (April 30), the Scottish Poetry Library launches #PoemsForCarers. To participate, people should either film themselves reading a poem or taking a photo of a poem and attaching it to a post including the hashtag.

Asif Khan, director of the Scottish Poetry Library, said: “We all owe a huge debt of thanks to health and social care workers and volunteers. The rainbow posters made by children, fundraising by veterans and musicians, and public clapping are demonstrably lifting the mood and expressing solidarity.

“Poetry is a source of comfort, inspiration and a way of showing and sharing our heartfelt appreciation for the heroic effort and sacrifice of NHS staff and the wider caring community.”

Doctor and SPL board member John Gillis added: “Using poetry to enable people to thank NHS and care staff is a wonderful idea. It is really important that we all try to support one another, and especially those who care for us and our families at this difficult time.

“Please send a poem or share #PoemsforCarers as widely as you can.”

The SPL presents all newly graduated doctors in Scotland a poetry anthology entitled Tools of the Trade and is preparing a similar volume for nurses and midwives.
