East Dunbartonshire GRACE aftercare group help is still on hand

East Dunbartonshire charity GRACE – Group Recovery Aftercare Community Enterprise – is still very much on hand to help people during the coronavirus crisis.

Although the charity’s bases at Hillhead and Auchinairn Community Centres had to close in March because of the virus, founder Robert Smith and his volunteers have quickly adapted the service provision to continue to support members, practically as well as emotionally.

Robert set up the charity back in 2012 to provide a safe space to support anyone who has suffered from trauma after battling his own demons after being made redundant.

Robert said: “The role of GRACE volunteers has quickly adapted to meet the needs of members during the CoVid-19 crisis. WhatsApp groups and a private Facebook group have been developed, which have quickly become effective communication and support platforms for members and are providing a sense of ‘community’.

“GRACE is currently providing formal supervision for volunteers via telephone/Zoom meetings to ensure they are supported during this crisis.

“GRACE also provides more informal support for volunteers, with regular online ‘check in’. Peer support continues to be an integral part of GRACE.”
