Jennifer (42) shed 7st 2lbs in only 20 months – just a couple of pounds less than the weight of seven-year-old William and his five-year-old brother Oliver put together.
It’s a struggle for administrator Jennifer to lift both boys at the same time these days. But when she manages it, it serves as a poignant reminder of just how much excess weight she used to carry around – and just how much her life has changed since shifting it.
By ditching her old habits and embracing Slimming World’s Food Optmising healthy eating plan for life, Jennifer has gone from a size 28 to a 10, looks years younger, and has all the energy she needs to keep up with her two little livewires at home.
She said: “I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into our Slimming World group in Lanark during January 2018.
“I felt like I would never be happy in my own skin again, but I’ve realised that when people believe in you – and you believe in yourself – you can do amazing things.
“I hope my weight loss can inspire other people to get started on their own journey and know that there’s a whole group of people waiting to support them every step of the way.”
Jennifer had gained weight through her teens, 20s and 30s by eating takeaways, relying on high-calorie convenience foods and snacking on crisps and chocolate.
She decided enough was enough when she hit 17st 11.5lbs with a string of health problems, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being told she was pre-diabetic.
Jennifer also needed surgery to repair an abdominal hernia but doctors said she’d need to lose at least 10 per cent of her bodyweight before they could operate.
In her first month with Slimming World, Jennifer was thrilled to lose 11lbs.
She said: “I couldn’t believe I was allowed to eat so much food and could still lose weight. All my favourites like cooked breakfasts, curries and roast dinners are still on the menu - I just cook them differently now, and they taste so much better.
“I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring staple foods like rice, pasta and potatoes – it makes the plan so versatile.
“I’ve picked up lots of tips and healthy recipes from the other members at my Slimming World group, too. We all really support each other and I’ve made so many new friends.”
By September 2018, Jennifer had shed 4st 7lbs, enough for her hernia surgery to go ahead and, better still, doctors told her she was now a good candidate for a less-invasive keyhole procedure with a much shorter recovery period.
Over the coming months, she continued to steadily lose 1-2lbs per week until she hit her fabulous final target total of 100lbs (7st 2lbs) lost, taking her down to 10st 9.5lbs.
She smiled: “What I’ve lost in weight, I’ve most definitely gained in confidence. I’ve rediscovered a love of clothes shopping and I’ve become more a more active person.
“I’m no longer the mum who sits at the picnic benches at the park and watches as the children play, I’m out there with them, climbing and jumping on trampolines, I’m having the time of my life!
I can’t thank my consultant Lian McCulloch and my fellow members enough for their support – I could never have done this without them.”
Lian, who has run groups in Lanark for almost 10 years, added: “Jennifer is an inspiration to so many people in our community and I hope her success will inspire even more people to make these changes as we enter into 2021,”
