Public health warning issued after outbreak that has affected 11 youngsters in Central Belt

A warning has been issued via the media by Public Health Scotland after it emerged that an outbreak of Hepatitus has affected a number of under-fives across Scotland’s Central Belt.

There are 11 known cases of the condition across four health boards, including NHS Lanarkshire which mostly emerged in March. As yet, there is no clear connection between the cases All potential causes are being explored but infection is considered to be a more probable source this time.

Now a warning has been issued so that parents can look for the telltale signs of the condition which affects just a handful of Scots per year.

Dr Nicholas Phin, Director of Public Health for PHS said: “If you have a child who is showing signs of jaundice, where the skin has a yellow tinge and is most easily seen in the whites of the eyes, then parents should contact their GP.

" We are continuing to investigate these cases and will provide further updates as and when they are available.”
