The University of Glasgow is the oldest academic institution in our city and has customs that are just as ancient as the uni itself - so we thought it was only right to have a look at some of the more modern student traditions!
From stumbling down Ashton Lane to scrawling through the charity shops on Byres Road - did you really study at the University of Glasgow if you haven’t...
5. Grabbed a punnet of chips at The University Cafe
The University Cafe is a Glasgow institution. Owned by the same family for over 100 years, if you haven’t been there at least once in your life, can you really call yourself a Glasgow Uni student? If you haven’t already, get down there treat yourself to classic chippy or a 99 on a rough afternoon. (Picture Robert Perry The Scotsman 6th June 2013)
6. Enjoyed a pint of Guinness at Jinty McGuinty’s
Guinness - it’s not just for St. Patrick’s Day! Ditch the lager and halfs for one day and get yourself down to Jinty’s for some Irish stout. Even Lewis Capaldi himself was spotted enjoying some black tar pints with fans while revelling at Jinty McGuinty’s on St Patrick’s Day earlier this year
7. Got accused of having a ‘Glasgow Uni accent’
We’ve all been there, you’re back home (or maybe even just out in town) and out of nowhere an old friend or complete stranger tells you: ‘You’ve got a Glasgow Uni accent’. What can you even say to that? Try your hardest to sound less posh and deny it? Say it’s not your fault and that people naturally pick up the accent of the people they spend the most time around? It’s not going to work - you’ve been done. (Pic: Adobe Stock)
8. Pretended you were in Hogwarts
No one would ever admit this - apart from the Quidditch Team - but we’ve all been walking to our next class and pretended like we were late for potions class rather than Intro to Law 2. Maybe the concept of having points removed from Hufflepuff would make us submit coursework on time - but that’s not likely. (Pic: University of Glasgow PGR blog)
