Carluke actress Sarah McCardie is panto star

WHEN members of Lanark’s St Mary’s Church needed a big wish granted for a charitable fundraising show, a Fairy Godmother in the shape of Sarah McCardie came along.

However, it turns out that Sarah is doing a double-shift in that role, also playing it in what is perhaps Lanarkshire’s biggest panto production of the year, Cinderella at Motherwell Civic Centre, running from November 20 to January 4.

Less than a fortnight before that run starts, on November 7, Carluke-born Sarah – whose parents now live in Pettinain –will be the star of the St Mary’s Cabaret Night when she turns into just one of what are several of her alter-egos, that of a professional singer.

“I’ve already done an independent film with Robert Carlyle earlier this year and appeared in the Edinburgh Festival in a Charlie Chaplin-inspired musical,” she said.

“In the meantime, I’ve been helping write a production for the Glasgow Arts Theatre with other female actors.

“And I’ve got my own business as a voice coach to the corporate sector!”

She added that her one and only worry about the Motherwell show is that members of the audience might remember this production’s nicey-nice Fairy Godmother playing a VERY nasty superbitch character in television’s’ River City.
