Coalburn Silver Band record best ever result

COALBURN Silver Band recorded their finest result in their 111 year history with an impressive third place at the Scottish Brass Band Championships.

The band, competing in the first section under Musical Director Gareth Bowman, gave a wonderfully musical and powerful interpretation of the set piece Brass Triumphant by Gareth Wood.

The band’s soloists all performed well with Tenor Horn Soloist, Rachel Baxter winning the trophy for best Horn player on the day.

Band president Alan Court said: “We compete in the second tier of competition - like the Championship in English football.

“This is our first year in this section and by finishing third we just missed out on promotion to the top tier.

“It is a remarkable result as five or six years ago we were in the fourth section.

“On the day, I think a lot of the band thought that we wouldn’t have a chance and we would be quite happy to remain in the section.

“However, I and other band members had a look at the other bands as we were performing last and I thought that we would definitely have a wee chance.

“We just missed out on promotion this year but hopefully in the next couple of years we will be able to get into the top section.”
