Could Carluke VC winner be claimed by West Lothian?

Special paving stones will be laid in the home towns of every UK soldier awarded the Victoria Cross as part of the World War One centenary events.

The specially-commissioned stones will be given to councils in the areas where the VC recipients were born.

And it is that decision which means that the paving stone for William Angus VC will be sent to Armadale, where he was born in 1888, and not Carluke.

Not surprisingly this has alarmed many in the town not least members of Carluke Parish Historical Society.

CPHS honorary president Christine Warren said: “This action is one of the most famous in World War One for two reasons.

“William Angus knew, and had been warned, that the action was deemed to be almost certain death and it was a Carluke man rescuing a Carluke man.

“Angus rescued Lt James Martin in no man’s land.

“Almost every national newspaper ran the story. Angus was feted all over Britain for his bravery in saving his Carluke townsman.”
