Death of well-known Cumbernauld community activist

A CUMBERNAULD man who served his country in the Normandy landings then fought to represent the rights of local tenants and senior citizens passed away recently, aged 88.

Ian Thom of Glenacre Road will be remembered as a key member of many local organisations, including the Carbrain Seniors.

He was the group’s chairman and was also vice chair of the Cumbernauld Citizens as well as the treasurer of the Kyle Citizens Trust.

Former cook Mr Thom who was affectionately known as ‘Big Ian’ was also a member of the board of Cumbernauld Housing Partnership.

Fellow community activist Rose Bowie said: “He was an outspoken member, talking up in the tenant’s interest. He walked the whole area, delivering newsletters in all weather; Ian also campaigned for better services in the out of hours health provision service,’’ she said.

“Cumbernauld will miss this giant of a man and will find it hard to replace him. Our heartfelt sympathy and wishes go out to Ian’s family,’’ added Mrs Bowie.

Mr Thom may also be recognised by our readers via his connection with two local pubs.

Mr Thom’s wife Agnes died three years ago. He is survived by daughter Joan who lives in Bothwell plus his grandchildren Lorna and Gary.

His memorial service has already taken place at Falkirk Crematorium.
