Digital wind of change blows in to Whitelee Windfarm

Whitelee Windfarm, the UK's biggest, is well-known for its popularity with local walkers, runners and pet owners.

But now for the first time, it has become a gateway to the digital future.

The ScottishPower-owned site on the outskirts of Glasgow is playing host to Google’s Digital Garage this Friday (August 10), which offers a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the world of digital and learn new digital skills from Google’s expert coaches – all for free.

Already this year Whitelee has attracted thousands of visitors to its free family fun day and more recently, the Run the Blades 10K, half marathon and 50K ultramarathon.

Now with digital-giants Google opting to use the venue to attract enthusiasts to its digital bus between 9am and 4pm, Whitelee is cementing its reputation as the go-to event location on the outskirts of Glasgow.

The Google Digital Garage bus is a free hub where people can learn how to harness the power of the internet to grow their business, protect their family, learn new skills and have fun online.

Regular Whitelee users already thinking of attending include the team from the Cycle Station, a not for profit social enterprise which provides bike hire for the windfarm trails as well as selling refurbished bikes

Alan Vas, from the Cycle Station, said: “At the moment we have bike hire and refurbished sales but will soon be opening a new maintenance workshop at Whitelee so I’m excited to see what the Google team can teach us.

“We are staffed by volunteers, many of whom are looking to reintegrate into the community such as recovering addicts or ex-offenders, so helpful employability skills as well as ways to help us promote and advertise what we do would be great – and I’m keen to learn how we can show off the advantages of electric bikes versus standard bikes too.”

Keith Anderson, ScottishPower CEO, added: “Digital technology is connecting us faster than ever before and this is a great opportunity for visitors to Whitelee to tap into the expert knowledge of the team from Google. So much of what we do at Whitelee involves digital connections, and with our popular visitor centre on site, what better place to host the Google bus.

“Many school pupils in Scotland will have received their exam results this week, which is why our team will be there as well to discuss digital careers and provide advice on the types of roles that could be on offer with ScottishPower.”

The Google team will host three workshops on the upper half of the bus which can be signed up for via the links below.

They will also have specialist digital experts on the lower half of the bus offering free advice on all things Digital for anyone wishing to drop-in.

ScottishPower will have further digital exhibits and activities for all ages (from kids to the elderly) covering virtual reality, digital careers, SMART homes of the future and electric vehicles.
