Fairtrade coffee morning in Biggar this morning

Fairtrade coffee, tea and home baking and will be available in the as well as a stall selling Fairtrade sweets and crafts.

The Fairtrade designation means that producers will get a fair price for their products, and as an added bonus profits from the event will go to the Fairtrade Foundation which supports projects in the developing world.

Team member Janet Moxley said: “Fairtrade is a great way to help people in the developing world who are often exploited by large companies who use their buying power to force them to sell at low prices.

“Fairtrade offers people a way out of this and a chance to invest in their communities and their futures.

“When we heard recently that Lanark had been awarded Fairtrade town status we realised that Biggar was already well on the to becoming a Fairtrade town too.

“We are hoping to form a group to take this forward. Biggar Primary has been a Fairtrade School for several years now and many shops in the town stock Fairtrade goods.

“We are delighted that the local Co-operative is supporting this event by donating supplies of Fairtrade tea and coffee. “We would urge anyone who likes chocolate and cake to come along and find out more about how Fairtrade can change people’s lives.”

The coffee morning takes place in the Gillespie Centre from 10am to noon today.
