Ex Rangers player to bring curtain down on 17-year professional career after 300-plus appearances for MLS club

American midfielder spent just one season at Rangers but went on to establish himself as a key figure in the MLS

Former Rangers midfielder Alejandro Bedoya has confirmed he will bring his professional football career to a close at the end of the 2026 MLS season.

The 39-year-old American arrived at Ibrox from Swedish outfit Orebro in 2011, joining Rangers during Ally McCoist’s spell in charge. However, his spell in Glasgow lasted just one campaign, with Bedoya making 13 appearances and finding the net once in a 5-0 win against Dundee United.

Following his departure from Scotland, Bedoya headed back to Sweden to join Helsingborgs before embarking on a three-year spell in France with Ligue 1 side Nantes.

It was in his homeland, however, where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career. Bedoya signed for Philadelphia Union in 2016 and quickly established himself as an influential figure, eventually becoming club captain and surpassing the 300-appearance mark.

His contribution also helped Philadelphia reach the MLS Cup final in 2022, further cementing his status as an important figure in the club's history.

At international level, Bedoya earned 66 caps for the United States, featuring at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was also part of the American squad that lifted the CONCACAF Gold Cup in both 2013 and 2017.

Bedoya's football journey began to gather momentum during his time at Boston College, where his performances earned him NCAA First-Team All-American recognition and the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Offensive Player of the Year award in 2007.

His impressive displays at college level paved the way for a move to Europe, with Swedish club Orebro securing his signature in 2009. Two years later, McCoist brought him to Rangers, providing the midfielder with an opportunity to test himself in Scottish football.

Although his time in Govan was relatively short-lived, Bedoya went on to enjoy a distinguished career across Europe and North America, making a significant impact at both club and international level.

Now, after a decade-long association with Philadelphia Union and a career spanning several countries, the American is preparing to call time on his playing days when the current MLS campaign concludes.
