La Concha mountain trek for Beatson Cancer Charity

An adventurous Clarkston couple are preparing to take on a challenge of a lifetime to raise vital funds for charity.

Stephanie and Colin Hutton are training hard to take on a trek up La Concha mountain, one of the highest peaks in the south of Spain at 1200m, in aid of the Beatson Cancer Charity.

But to make the mission even tougher the couple are flying to Spain and back in the same day – meaning the challenge will be completed in an incredible 17 hours.

The couple make up a team of 10 intrepid hikers who are hoping to complete the trek on Saturday, March 31, aiming to raise £10,000 in the process.

Already half the fund-raising target has been met and now a final push is on to raise as much money as possible.

Stephanie, 33, knows first-hand the phenomenal care and treatment provided at the Beatson because her mum, Claire, continues to undergo chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer.

She said: “When mum was diagnosed 18 months ago it was like a complete bolt from the blue as she had been fit, healthy and enjoying life. At first the diagnosis was that mum had incurable and inoperable cancer – so we felt as if there was no hope.

“That all changed as soon as mum was transferred to the Beatson. All the staff are so understanding, caring and phenomenal at what they do. They immediately explained what the options were and following a major operation and six rounds of chemotherapy mum was well on the road to recovery.

“Unfortunately, the cancer has now returned and mum is back at the Beatson beginning her latest rounds of chemotherapy.

“So that’s why we’re taking on this challenge to raise as much money as possible for the Beatson. They perform amazing, life-saving work every day and provide incredible support to families.

“Throughout everything in the last 18 months the Beatson have been there every step of the way and I would urge anyone who has been touched by cancer in any way to donate to this fantastic cause.”

La Concha is located in the Marbella area of Spain and is part of the Sierra Blanca mountain range.

Its exposed ridges, vertical walls and rocky summit will ensure it’s a tough challenge but the team is ready to tackle it head on.
